7 Easy Ways to Incorporate Color into Your Home

If you’re like most people, when you think about adding color to your home, you envision this:

But - adding color to your home doesn’t have to be a permanent, all-encompassing design element like it is in this rainbow inspired playroom. For a lot of homeowners, adding color can be intimidating, but if you’re feeling sick of your neutral-on-neutral spaces, here’s 7 easy, non-committal ways to incorporate color into your home!

**Designer tip: select a few colors or tones to incorporate throughout the main spaces of your home using the following 7 tips, so the palette flows from room to room!

The colorful artwork in this (otherwise neutral) room draws attention to the statement fireplace and offers a pop of color that can easily be switched out down the road should the homeowners decide to change the color palette.

The custom Kelly Johnston artwork in this dining room offered a beautiful pop of blue and tied into the Lake Michigan view out the adjacent window. This, combined with the tree-lined landscape provides the perfect amount of color for this sophisticated space.

This cobalt artwork is the perfect pop of color in this neutral batten-walled dining room.

Adding color in a kitchen can be overwhelming as most of the design components are fairly permanent elements. Cabinets, tile, and countertops are big investments, so if you’re not ready to invest in color, you can easily keep the entire kitchen neutral (like this one!), and add pops of color with a few bold vases and accessories. You can also swap them out depending on the season so your kitchen always feels festive.

This neutral bedroom uses a bold set of vases (paired with colorful artwork from tip #1!) to take a neutral bedroom to the next level!

No space is too ‘unimportant’ to be special. Even a hallway or passthrough deserves to feel unique and well-designed, and the colorful accessories in this space took an otherwise neutral hallway and gave it the pop it needed!

Pillows are probably the most popular way to add a pop of color to your space. They can easily be swapped out season to season, and they can be purchased on a tight budget. (Hint: Homegoods has great, designer pillows for an affordable price!)

In this hallway, we used a series of blue pillows with a cobalt window seat cushion to give this neutral space the perfect pop! Don’t be afraid to mix patterns in your pillows. Look at all the different patterns on one window seat!

Draperies and window shades are the perfect way to add a pop to any room. I love that these bright green roman shades frame out the tree-lined yard tying the outside with the inside decor.

Remember this dining room from Tip #2 Artwork? It also has an ombre rug that fades from neutral to colorful! It’s the perfect pop under the table.

With the wall-to-wall windows in this dining room, and the tree-lined yard, I love that this green rug brings the outdoor color palette in. Without this pop of color, this dining room would be a bit bland, but it’s the perfect mix of pattern and color to make this space feel special.

Not everyone thinks of adding a ‘rug’ to a bathroom, but this pop of yellow serves as the perfect bathmat and soft place to rest your feet when exiting the shower and bathtub. I love how the pop of yellow (paired with the artwork) makes it feel cheerful and exotic.

Speaking of bathrooms! Without the lime green towels, this bathroom is 100% neutral. Neutral isn’t bad, but the pop of lime green makes it special and unique, and it gives this black and white space a refreshing vibe.

Sometimes, you find the perfect pop of color in FURNITURE! In this case, we found an antique dresser and had it professionally finished in the color of our choice (Kelly green) to make this stairway in the kids’ study room more fun! I also love that even though the walls are neutral, the alternating striped shiplap pattern made it fun and unique.

Even sophisticated dining rooms can have a pop of color! These plum parsons chairs were the perfect pop to this otherwise neutral space.

So there you have it! Adding color to your home doesn’t have to be scary or permanent! You can weave small elements of color throughout your home to give it the perfect pop of your personality. These can all be achieved on a tight budget, so you can move on to a new palette guilt-free when you get sick of the colors you chose!
